sad Utopian Temple Surviving the end of Utopia

Greetings all,

Every age Utopia losses 3000-5000 players. Currently it is sitting at around 25,000. During Utopia’s height 130,000 was held for all of 2003 and into 2004. Those days are long over and it is just a matter of time before the levels drop below even the first age with 20,000. It is just a matter of time before the plug is pulled. Anyone who does not believe this is kidding themselves.

My question is

What are we going to do to keep Utopian Temple around after this occurs?

What are we going to do now to make this keep Temple running and more attractive?

There has been a lot done already with the new game threads all all but is it enough and can we make this more and all a round gaming fourm?

I like many others want to see Temple survive in the future even after Utopia ends or gets even smaller than it is now.

Well, it's not likely to die completely (unless of course BG pulls the plug since there's no use for the tools he programs), since a LOT of people who post here, haven't played Utopia for a long time already.

It's very true that most of us don't play anymore but what can we do to help make Temple survive?

I think a lot is being done already; making forums with other points of interests than Utopia, like games, movies, books, "real life" (RGD) and "silly stuff" (LA).

I'm not sure if there's much else to do

I agree with Bierkrug that it'd be good to get some other ways to attract people, though.

I'm still saying a link-exchange with mafiascum would do us a bunch of good. Our mafia games are fast-paced (I heard there are nights of a week or two there sometimes?) and everyone here already knows about mafiascum. Why not let them know about us?

Hopefully of course the people coming here from there will go to LA and be sucked in.

We could link-exchange with some other sites, too, perhaps.

Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: Oh and the problem with all that stuff, Sossy, is that it doesn't attract any new users. It just keeps the old ones around :/

I agree with Lunor. You need new people coming in to keep this site alive and kicking. At some point UT will have to take a step back from Utopia and focus on other things. I know the forum currently doesn't just focus on Utopia anymore but obviously the site itself is still a Utopia fan/tool/community site. That will have to change. The front page currently is hardly used anymore.

Currently the forum seems to already be going into the direction of more of a general community forum, which isn't that bad I think. Especially not as long as something else hasn't proven to be succesfull yet as in bringing alot of new people in. The media area(Movies and TV especially) though, in it's current form doesn't stimulate discussion. I think it's a bit silly to have to ask for threads to be opened in there. It may look nice and all, but what's the use of it really? The only thing u can really post is a review of a movie or tv episode you've seen. It limits discussion too much. Why isn't it just moderated like any other area? Let the members determine the content instead of the moderators. Currently you can't even just post news about certain movies or trailers. You can't start discussions on directors, or actors, certain genres, the oscars, moviegames etc etc. The concept is doomed to fail from the start.

Anyway, instead of posting just Utopia news on the front page, why not just let users/reporters post certain internet related news on the frontpage? Let's be honest, most of us are internet geeks I think there are plenty of people that could come up with some interesting/funny/odd things now and then. It could be anything. Just some funny movie or news from somewhere. Or something WoW or other games related. A new trailer on a long awaited movie. Even the anouncement of a new mafia game or something. Maybe some members would like to write something on a regular basis, like a column. Let the frontpage represent what this forum and it's users are interested in and see how that develops.

Find another game to coincide with? Failing that, spread out and find popular sites to share ideas with.

I don't think anything needs doing. I've been here for 4 years now, and only at the very beginning was my presence due to Utopia. Ever since that it's because of the UT community. In my mind, UT is General Discussions and the Mafia forum.

Of course, I can see how could be a problem for the people who frequent UT mostly because of Utopia Discussions. Also, the whole purpose of the site will have to be changed. Is BG willing to run nothing but a forum for nothing in particular?

Link exchange works of course. Another good idea might be to become more interactive. Contests and such tend to raise people's involvement with the site.

I am not sure where you got your numbers from however these are right off of the Utopian hall of fame page. And this age is showing just above 25,000 at this time.

Over 20,000 rulers participated in the first generation of Utopia, which ended on January 10th, 1999.

Over 30,000 rulers participated in the Second Age of Utopia, which ended on March 20th, 1999.

Over 40,000 rulers participated in the Third Age of Utopia, which ended on May 31st, 1999.

Over 40,000 rulers participated in the Fourth Age of Utopia, which ended on August 15th, 1999.

Over 40,000 rulers participated in the Fifth Age of Utopia, which ended on October 30, 1999.

Over 50,000 rulers participated in the Sixth Age of Utopia, which ended on January 31, 2000

Over 70,000 rulers participated in the Seventh Age of Utopia, which ended on May 7th, 2000.

Over 80,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Chaos, which ended on July 28th, 2000.

Over 80,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Renaissance, which ended on October 24th, 2000.

Over 90,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Conflict, which ended on January 29th, 2001.

Over 100,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Nobility, which ended on April 15th, 2001.

Over 100,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Era of Magic, which ended on July 23rd, 2001.

Over 100,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Era of Mystery, which ended on October 27th, 2001.

Over 100,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Era of Strife, which ended on January 21, 2002.

Over 100,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Valour, which ended on April 28th, 2002.

Over 120,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Discovery, which ended on July 14th, 2002.

Over 120,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of the People, which ended on October 19th, 2002.

Over 130,000 rulers participated in the Utopian Age of Heroes, which ended on January 12th, 2003.

That stayed constant until 2004, after early 2004 they stopped showing numbers

Well if one looks at the number of people in each forum since round 5 (when I joined) One would see more people viewing the spam LA and RGD and now other forums and less people viewing the Utopia forums when before it was the opposite.

I got them straight from mehul. He told me to check all these pages:

http://games.swirve.com/utopia/honors/age13p-1/race.htm (WOL)
http://games.swirve.com/utopia/honors/age13p-2/race.htm (Battlefields)

changing 'age13p-1' into 'age14p-1' and so on

I just added the numbers of races together and my previous post shows the outcome. However, genesis isn't counted.

It's a game which is "controlled" by the cheaters and the elite (most often the same people). You tell me.

Yeah, like Nimon said. You either get stuck in a frustrating ghetto and constantly get raped by cheaters or you join the cheaters and spend most of your free time on it and find yourself doing silly things, like setting your alarm at night because you have to attack. Going home early because the war starts. Even being called by a KD mate because you're being waved. That's just no fun, I get frustrated even thinking about it.

We need to make UT 'the' go to place for forums, mafia games, crazy LA topics...etc. Promotion on facebook, myspace, other online activities will bring in a new audience.

Another idea would be for us to find another game and move in as a group. A UT alliance or something. I don't know I am just talking here.

mad Imho

you want to save utopa then kill the alliances, more have left the game to unfair and dishonorable play than for any other reason.
